Most employees would like to spend more time outside, according to a survey by Center Parcs, which found that 89% of workers would like get out of the office more. Despite the obvious benefits of enjoying regular fresh air – it can boost productivity and morale in the workplace – the research reveals that only one per cent of meetings actually take place outside.

“When you consider the benefits of being outdoors, it is incredible to think that companies are not doing more to encourage their teams to spend more time outside where possible,” says Ellie Jones, National Account Manager at Center Parcs.

Center Parcs has seen a significant rise in corporate bookings in recent years, and, says Jones, actively encourages its clients to combine conferences with outdoor team building. “Fresh air and the natural environment is an incredible tool to help motivate, revitalise and inspire teams and it is our mission to encourage as many companies as possible to get their teams spending more time outdoors not just this summer, but the whole year round,” she adds.

Center Parcs has launched a series of staff team-building days to help workers “reap the benefits of spending time outdoors – and boost individual and collective wellbeing”, explains Jones.

The newest activity – den building – focuses on re-introducing the idea of ‘play’ into adulthood. The notion of playing might seem puerile, but, says Jones, studies show that engaging in play has many benefits for adults. “[Playing helps to] generate optimism, enhance relationships and relieves stress due to the release of endorphins, the body’s natural feel-good chemicals,” she explains. “Den building is known for encouraging imagination and team work for children and this principle can be applied to adults too.

“With our busy lifestyles it can be hard to find the time to leave the office and enjoy some fresh air, but the benefits of just an hour or so outside per day speak for themselves,” she adds.
